Strawberry Shortcake

Strawberry Shortcake
1979-Present
Kenner (toy production)

I love my little Strawberry scented ball of cute! The vintage Strawberry Shortcakes were utterly adorable – they are still around now but sadly have now been changed to look like slutty teenagers (why do toy companies keep doing this? What’s wrong with chubby cheeks?)

Anyway, before I rage on…

Strawberry Shortcake was actually originally designed as a little character by a lady named Muriel Fahrion who used her in greetings cards.

Kenner then bought the rights to produce her as a toy.

She became very popular and before long Kenner released more plastic toys, merchandise and eventually a tv show and books etc.

My little one is a 1979 flat handed Strawberry Shortcake.

The dolls released in 1979 had flat palms instead of curved hands. When the dolls were reissued in 1980 they moved to the curved handed versions.  Subsequently the flat handed girls tend to be a bit more sought after due to their rarity.

Heres Strawberry in her glory balancing on some books – note the flat hands.

Mine comes with her original dress, leggings, shoes and hat which is attached to her head with 2 little plastic bits. I considered cutting her hat off – but poor Strawberry has some major hat hair going on under there after 40 years so I thought I would leave it on!

Kenner released other characters in the series including Blueberry Muffin (one day!!), Apple Dumplin’, Huckleberry Pie, Raspberry Tart, Orange Blossom and more.

And yes, they were all scented.

My Strawberry Shortcake still smells of strawberries after all these years.
